EDI Pledge

To me, Equality (and Equity), Diversity and Inclusion are principles inherent to everything we do in the arts. They enrich all that we do, and they’re essential if we want an arts workforce full of innovation, different voices, perspectives, pathways, progression and opportunity. They should be the fabric we operate from, where we make informed, fair and just decisions, and they intersect with everything: outcomes, impact, process, design and more.

Why is this pledge on my website?

Because change is needed, and I’m committed to:

  • Taking radical action, now.

  • Creating opportunities at every level.

  • Building an anti-racist, anti-ableist and anti-discriminatory culture where people can thrive and fulfil their potential.

  • Being kind.

  • Holding myself accountable.

I’m a reflective person, and I’ve thought a great deal about my own journey and my background as a working-class creative. That background meant I experienced barriers, and I learned how the arts sector ‘operates’. My work ethic, and the fact that I have doggedly pursued my ambitions and goals, led to opportunities, and I now live with, and acknowledge, many privileges.

I’ve invested time in researching, organising and taking part in training and development so I can educate myself, understand my biases, better acknowledge my privileges, and change ingrained or learned behaviour when it comes to EDI and access in my work.

My EDI Promise

  • To ensure everyone receives equal and fair treatment.

  • To recognise that we live in a society and culture where inequality and prejudice are a common lived experience for many people.

  • To be mindful of personal experiences and circumstances.

  • To bring attention to, report or call out behaviour that is hurtful, degrading or disrespectful in any way.

  • To remain fiercely committed to promoting equality and fairness, and to reflecting the diversity of our society in my work.

  • To be actively anti-discriminatory, and to welcome, respect and value all people for their individuality.

  • To support and celebrate ‘difference’, and to expect my clients, colleagues and friends to join me in promoting these values.

I believe in action. That’s why the people I work with often identify as diverse, marginalised, underrepresented, or as working outside the ‘mainstream’, at the intersection of artform, innovation, change-making and disruption.

I’m Co-Director of Propel Dance, the UK’s first professional wheelchair dance company. Our mission is to develop professional, paid opportunities for professional wheelchair dancers. It’s run by me and two other women, with a full succession plan in place so that, in future, it leads to more opportunities for and with disabled people. It’s one example of my EDI pledge in action, and it runs through all the work I do.
